Zenka by Alison Brodie @alisonbrodie2 #Review

I received an ARC from the author.

Ruthless, devious, and loyal, Zenka is a Hungarian pole-dancer with a dark past.

When cranky London mob boss, Jack Murray, saves her life she vows to become his guardian angel – whether he likes it or not. Happily, she now has easy access to pistols, knives and shotguns.

Jack discovers he has a son, Nicholas, a male nurse with a heart of gold. Problem is, Nicholas is a wimp.

Zenka takes charge. Using her feminine wiles and gangland contacts, she will turn Nicholas into the son any self-respecting crime boss would be proud of. And she succeeds!

Nicholas is learning fast that sometimes you have to kill, or be killed. As his life becomes more terrifying, questions have to be asked:

How do you tell a mob boss you don’t want to be his son?

And is Zenka really who she says she is?

After reading Brake Failure by Alison Brodie I couldn't wait to read her next book. Alison Brodie has a wonderful writing style that never fails to capture my attention.

The characters in Zenka are best described as larger than life and I love the black comedy/dark humour that is used within the story to make them even more intriguing. The characters all have their distinct and quirky personalities that easily drew me to them. Even the minor characters that Nicholas encounters in his day to day life bring something to the story.

Some pretty crazy situations crop up in this book but the comical side to the story works so well. There is a little bit of everything contained in the pages coming together to create a fun but dark and gritty story. Along with a fabulous main character Zenka! The letters that Zenka writes were to the point and pretty funny showing her personality perfectly. They made a great addition to the story and were perfectly placed to provide that little bit of extra humour.

To be honest the whole story is a like an out of control rollercoaster ride that well and truly grabbed me carrying me all the way to the end. I'm trying to be very vague about the plot as it really is worth reading for yourself and seeing all the great twists and turns play out. There is romance but it isn't overpowering and just plays out nicely alongside the story itself. At times I was left wondering where the story would go next and I loved being kept on my toes.

Funny, quirky and brilliant!
Five stars!

With thanks to Alison Brodie for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

  1. OMG! You just have to give me a moment to catch my breath ...

Okay, Im back. Thank you, Rae, for this heartfelt review of ZENKA. I am thrilled you enjoyed it. I write in different genres but this is the first time I have written crime/violence/black humour (p.s. I adore movies like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and didn't know if Zenka would be well received. So, after reading your review, I let out a huge sigh of relief! Thank you. x

BTW: My next 2 books are: 14 short stories with a comedic dystopian slant; and a tragic paranormal romance. You will be the first to see them!
